Your images never leave your device: everything happens in the browser, nothing is uploaded.
How to convert WebP to PNG in 3 steps
Choose your WebP files
Tap Choose images and select one or many .webp files. On a computer, you can also drag them in.
Wait for the conversion
It takes less than a second per image, right in your browser. PNG is already selected.
Download the PNG
Tap Download image. With several, Download all gives you a .zip.
The file name stays the same and only the extension changes: logo.webp becomes logo.png. For other formats, such as HEIC and GIF, use the image converter.
Why convert to PNG
WebP was created by Google to make images on the web lighter, which is why so many images saved from a site arrive as .webp. The trouble shows up outside the browser: older editing programs, presentation tools, printing apps and upload forms that only take JPG and PNG.
Between the two, PNG is the closest to the original WebP: it keeps transparency and loses no quality. It’s the right choice for logos, icons, screenshots, drawings and any image on a transparent background.
WebP to PNG or to JPG?
| If the image is | Best format |
|---|---|
| A logo, icon or cutout on a transparent background | PNG: the transparency stays |
| A screenshot, text or flat-color drawing | PNG: sharp letters, no loss |
| An everyday photo to send or post | JPG: a much lighter file, on the WebP to JPG page |
Your image never leaves your device
The conversion runs in your browser, using your device’s memory. The image isn’t uploaded to our server, and nothing is kept. The new PNG comes out without the photo’s hidden data (EXIF), such as location.
Limits
Up to 20 images at a time, up to 20 MB each. Very large images are scaled down to fit the device’s memory, and the screen tells you.
Other conversions
For the same file as a lighter JPG, use the WebP to JPG page. A JPG photo that needs to become a PNG has the JPG to PNG page. If the PNG is heavy, resize it to fewer pixels. If the image came from a Pin, the Pinterest image downloader gives you the file at the largest size stored.
Frequently asked questions
Why convert WebP to PNG instead of JPG?
To keep the transparent background and lose no quality. JPG paints transparency white and uses lossy compression. If it’s an everyday photo you’ll just send, the WebP to JPG page gives you a lighter file.
Does the transparent background stay?
Yes. PNG keeps the WebP’s transparency pixel by pixel, including the soft edges of logos, icons and cutouts.
Why did the image I saved come as WebP?
Many websites serve images as WebP because the file is lighter and the page loads faster. When you save the image from the browser, you get the file the way the site served it: as .webp.
Is the PNG bigger than the WebP?
Almost always. WebP compresses very well, and PNG keeps everything without loss. In exchange for the size, PNG opens in any editing, presentation and printing program.
Does the image lose quality?
No. PNG saves the image exactly as it opened, with no lossy compression.
What about animated WebP?
The conversion uses the first frame. A PNG is always a still image.
How many images can I convert at once?
Up to 20, up to 20 MB each. With more than one, Download all gives you a .zip with all of them.
Is the image uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs in your browser. The file never leaves your device and isn’t kept.
Does it work on iPhone?
Yes. Safari opens WebP and saves PNG normally. The downloaded file goes to the Files app, in Downloads.
How do I open WebP on a computer without converting?
Browsers open it: drag the file into a Chrome, Edge or Firefox tab. To edit it, put it in a document or print it, PNG usually causes less trouble.
