How to make your Facebook cover in 3 steps
Choose the photo
Tap Choose photo. A wide photo works best.
Frame it
Drag the photo and adjust the zoom. Keep the main content inside the dashed area: that’s what shows on phones.
Download and change it on Facebook
Tap Download photo and, on your profile or page, tap edit cover to upload the image.
Facebook still shows the cover so you can reposition it. Since the image is already the right size, just save it without dragging.
Facebook cover photo size
| Where | Size |
|---|---|
| File Facebook recommends | 851 × 315 pixels |
| On computers | Shows at 820 × 312, almost whole |
| On phones | Shows at 640 × 360, without the sides |
| Minimum accepted | 400 × 150 pixels |
| What this tool makes | 851 × 315 pixels, as JPG |
Facebook also says the cover loads fastest as a JPG under 100 KB. It accepts bigger files; to get close to that, use compress image after downloading.
What shows on phones
On a computer, the cover is a wide strip and shows almost whole. On a phone, it’s taller and narrower, and Facebook shows only the middle: the sides disappear. The dashed area on the tool’s screen shows roughly that middle part.
- keep faces, text and logos inside the dashed area;
- use the sides for background, scenery or a plain color;
- check it on both phone and computer after changing it.
Covers with text or a logo
For a business page cover, simple artwork works better than a collage: the name or main line in big letters, in the middle, with good contrast. To fit a wide logo without cropping, use Whole photo with a white or black background.
Sizes can change
Facebook changes the look of its site and app from time to time. The sizes on this page are the ones from October 2026. If Facebook shows another size when you change the cover, follow it and check the result on your phone. PegaPic isn’t affiliated with Facebook or Meta.
Your photo never leaves your device
The photo is opened, adjusted and saved in your browser, using your phone’s or computer’s memory. It isn’t uploaded to any server, and nothing is kept. The file comes out without the photo’s hidden data (EXIF), such as location.
One photo at a time, up to 20 MB, as JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC (HEIC only where the browser opens it).

Frequently asked questions
What size is a Facebook cover photo?
Facebook recommends an 851 × 315 pixel file. The cover shows at 820 × 312 on computers and at 640 × 360 on phones, and it must be at least 400 × 150. This tool makes exactly 851 × 315, as JPG.
Why is my cover cropped on phones?
Because on phones the cover is taller and narrower (640 × 360) than on computers. Facebook shows the middle of the image and crops the sides. The dashed area on the tool’s screen shows roughly that part.
Where should I put text and logos on the cover?
Inside the dashed area, in the middle of the image: that way they show on both computers and phones. Your profile picture sits over part of the cover, near the bottom; keep that part for background only.
Is a business page cover the same size?
The sizes Facebook recommends apply to both profile and page covers. If Facebook shows another size when you change the cover, follow it.
Can I use a tall photo?
Yes. With Fill the frame, you choose the strip of the photo that shows. With Whole photo, it sits small in the middle, with a blurred, white or black background on the sides.
Why does my cover look blurry?
Facebook compresses images when they’re published, and a small photo that gets enlarged loses sharpness. Use a big photo; the screen warns you when the part you chose has fewer pixels than the cover.
What’s the ideal file size for the cover?
Facebook says the cover loads fastest under 100 KB, but it accepts bigger files. To get close to that, run the cover through compress image after downloading.
Is the photo uploaded to a server?
No. The photo is opened, adjusted and saved in your browser, and it never leaves your device. The tool doesn’t access your Facebook account.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in the phone’s browser, with no app to install. Drag the photo with one finger and pinch with two to zoom.
