How to make your LinkedIn profile picture in 3 steps
Choose the photo
Tap Choose photo and pick a photo of your face, in good light.
Frame it
Drag the photo and adjust the zoom until your face is in the middle of the circle, with a bit of your shoulders.
Download and change it on LinkedIn
Tap Download photo and, on your LinkedIn profile, tap your photo to upload the new one.
On a phone, you can pinch with two fingers to zoom. On a computer, the arrow keys and the + and - keys work too.
LinkedIn profile picture size
| Item | What it is |
|---|---|
| Shape | Square, shown in a circle |
| Recommended size | 400 × 400 pixels |
| Accepted file | JPG, PNG or GIF, up to 8 MB |
| What this tool makes | 400 × 400 pixels, as JPG |
LinkedIn recommends 400 × 400 pixels and accepts bigger photos, which it scales down itself. Uploading it already cropped saves you from finding your forehead or chin cut off in the circle.
What a good profile picture looks like
- Your face filling a good part of the circle, from the front, with a bit of your shoulders. From far away, the photo turns into a dot.
- Light from the front, near a window, with no shadow on your face.
- A simple background, plain or blurred, with nothing drawing attention.
- A recent photo that looks like you today, in the clothes you wear at work.
- No heavy filter: whoever is hiring wants to recognize you in a meeting.
Matching photo and banner
The profile banner sits behind your photo, at the top of the page. A banner in a plain color or with a photo of your work makes the profile look more professional. For it, use the LinkedIn banner resizer, at 1584 × 396.
Sizes can change
LinkedIn changes the look of its site and app from time to time. The sizes on this page are the ones from October 2026. If LinkedIn’s help starts recommending another size, check how the photo looks after changing it. PegaPic isn’t affiliated with LinkedIn.
Your photo never leaves your device
The photo is opened, cropped and saved in your browser, using your phone’s or computer’s memory. It isn’t uploaded to any server, and nothing is kept. The file comes out without the photo’s hidden data (EXIF), such as location and phone model.
One photo at a time, up to 20 MB, as JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC (HEIC only where the browser opens it).
Other networks
For your WhatsApp profile, use the WhatsApp profile picture without cropping page. For a Facebook cover, the Facebook cover photo resizer. If a site wants the photo at a few KB, use compress image after downloading.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a LinkedIn profile picture?
Square, at 400 × 400 pixels, the size LinkedIn’s help recommends. It accepts bigger photos, up to 8 MB, and scales them down. This tool makes exactly 400 × 400, as JPG.
Is the photo round on LinkedIn?
Yes. LinkedIn shows the profile picture in a circle, without the square’s corners. The circle on the tool’s screen shows what stays visible: keep your face in the middle of it.
Can I use a photo bigger than 400 × 400?
Yes, LinkedIn accepts it and scales it down. The advantage of uploading it at 400 × 400 is seeing the result first: the framing you chose here is what shows on your profile.
How do I change my photo on LinkedIn?
On your profile, tap your current photo and choose the option to upload a new one. LinkedIn shows its own crop: since the photo is already framed and square, just save it as it is.
What makes a good profile picture?
Your face from the front, filling a good part of the circle, with a bit of your shoulders, light from the front, a simple background and the clothes you wear at work. A recent photo that looks like you today.
Does the tool remove the background or retouch the photo?
No. It only crops and resizes, without changing the background, the light or your face. For a clean background, take the photo in front of a plain wall.
My photo is wide. Can I use the whole thing?
Yes, with Whole photo, on a blurred, white or black background. For a profile picture, though, your face ends up small in the circle: it’s better to Fill the frame and zoom in on your face.
Why did I get the sharpness warning?
Because the part you chose is less than 400 pixels wide and will be enlarged. Zoom out or use a bigger photo, taken with the back camera.
Is the photo uploaded to a server?
No. The photo is opened, cropped and saved in your browser, and it never leaves your device. The tool doesn’t access your LinkedIn account.
What about the profile banner?
The banner has another, much wider shape. Use the LinkedIn banner resizer, which makes the image at 1584 × 396.
