Why WhatsApp crops your photo
The WhatsApp profile picture is square. When the photo is tall or wide, the app asks you to pick a square part and leaves the rest out: in a full-body photo, the head or the feet disappear; in a wide logo, the ends disappear.
The fix is to make the photo square first. With the whole photo inside the square and a background in the leftover space, there’s nothing to crop. In chats, the photo shows in a circle; anyone who taps it sees the whole square.

WhatsApp doesn’t publish an official size. An opened profile photo usually shows at 640 × 640 pixels, and a bigger photo is scaled down by the app: uploading a huge photo doesn’t make it sharper for others.
Blurred, white or black background
- Blurred: the photo itself, softened, fills the space around it. It looks natural and suits any photo.
- White: clean, good for logos, product photos and business cards.
- Black: makes dark, concert and night photos stand out.
If the photo is already square, there’s no leftover space and the background doesn’t show.

Your photo never leaves your device
The photo is opened, adjusted and saved in your browser, using your phone’s or computer’s memory. It isn’t uploaded to any server, and nothing is kept. The file comes out without the photo’s hidden data (EXIF), such as location and phone model.

Is the photo uploaded to a server?
No. The photo is opened, adjusted and saved in your browser, and it never leaves your device. The tool doesn’t access your WhatsApp either: you change the photo in the app yourself.
How do I use the downloaded photo on iPhone?
On iPhone, the file goes to the Files app, in Downloads. Open the photo, tap share and Save Image: it goes to the Photos app, and then shows up in WhatsApp’s gallery.
Why did I get the sharpness warning?
Because the part you chose is less than 640 pixels wide and will be enlarged. Zoom out or use a bigger photo, taken with the back camera.
